Graduate Student Internship

The American University of Kuwait is offering two graduate internship opportunities in Student Affairs/Student Services during 2019 as the program celebrates its 11th year of operation. The internship program is designed to provide graduate students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain essential experiences within professional areas of Student Affairs/Student Services, a deeper understanding of higher education administration, and to acquire specific skill sets which will help prepare them for a career in the profession.

Placement possibilities exist in eight different professional areas within Student Affairs/Student Services and include the following:

Student Affairs

  • Office of the Dean of Student Affairs
  • Counseling Center
  • Office of Student Life

*Student Affairs units report to the Dean of Student Affairs

Student Services

  • Office of Admissions
  • Office of the Dean of Academic Support Services
  • Office of the Registrar
  • Academic Advising Center
  • Learning Support Services

* Admissions reports to the Vice-President for Admissions & Public Affairs; and Student Services reports to the Dean of Academic Support Services

Interns will be expected to work 40 hours a week between a primary placement (30hrs) and a secondary placement (10hrs) from the above eight departments. Students may receive academic credit for the internship if agreed upon between the supervisor and the intern's college or university.

The summer internship is for a 7-8 week period starting from early June through late July or early August depending on agreeable terms and scheduling needs (start and end dates may be flexible).

Anticipated 2019 Dates:

Arrival in Kuwait May 31st 2019
Departure July 26th 2019

  • Graduate students currently enrolled through the spring term prior to the internship in a Graduate Program with a specialization in college student personnel, higher education, or related fields preferred. Interns must be in good academic standing and have completed at least one year of their graduate program at the start of the internship. 
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills required. 
  • Possess administrative, organizational, multi-tasking skills, and can work in a fast-paced environment 
  • Openness to learn about Middle Eastern culture, diverse populations, and/or the Arabic language.
  • International travel or experience is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

Compensation for each selected intern includes the following based upon an 8-week experience (prorated for durations less than 8 weeks).

  • Living stipend
  • Travel allowance
  • Fully-furnished apartment (shared accommodation)

Interns are responsible for securing their own passport, making all travel arrangements, and securing all health and travel insurance, AUK will assist with securing a visa as required.

November 7th Deadline to submit completed application materials at Midnight EST (must be submitted electronically via e-mail)
Nov 11th-28th Applications reviewed by selection committee
Dec 2nd -10th Only selected candidates contacted for interview by phone or video conferencing
December 17th Finalists notified (once confirmed, all eligible applicants to be informed)

Please note that it may take up to 72 hours to receive the application given differences in work week, time zones and holidays.
