Overall Process Academic Planning

Academic Planning

Course planning in preparation to study abroad is absolutely critical. You want to be sure that you are able to take classes abroad that allow you to make satisfactory progress with your AUK academic requirements in alignment with the remaining courses you will take at AUK so that you will graduate on time. ALL students interested in studying abroad should follow the steps below for successful academic planning of your study abroad experience.  Students must complete the Study Abroad Academic Planning Form which was structured to help facilitate this process:

1. Review your degree progress (including your four-year plan)

  • What courses do you still have to complete for your major, minor, and general education requirements?
  • When are these courses usually offered?
  • How many terms do you have left to complete your degree?

2. Compile a study abroad course list.
Using academic information to identify potential courses that you plan to take while abroad and create a course list to guide your planning process.

  • Which institutions, programs and courses are available to you as a study abroad student? Are there any restrictions or prerequisites?
  • Are courses taught in English or in another language?
  • What term(s) are courses usually offered on the program?
  • How many courses and credits are you required to enroll in?
  • Are there alternative courses you can identify in case your initial courses are not available?

3. Meet with your Faculty Advisor to determine recommended study abroad courses for YOU.

  • Does the department recommend that you have completed certain courses or requirements prior to studying abroad?
  • What major, minor, general education requirements will your college and department allow you to satisfy with study abroad coursework?
  • What steps are required by your college and department to request degree credit?
  • What materials are needed to evaluate your courses (e.g. syllabi, course descriptions) prior to departure and upon your return?

4. Complete & submit the Study at Another Institution – Study Abroad form
Submit the completed and signed form to determine if your study abroad coursework may meet AUK and governmental requirements. Even if you are not planning to complete degree requirements while abroad, it is still required that you complete the form and this process.

  • What material does AUK need to evaluate your courses (e.g. syllabi, course descriptions) prior to departure and upon your return?
  • How best to communicate any changes to your course list to AUK once you are abroad?

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Scholarship students must get prior government approval for all coursework taken at institutions outside of Kuwait if they wish to ensure it will be transferrable and able to meet graduation requirements.  Therefore, before registering for any courses AUK students must complete and submit the Study at Another Institution – Study Abroad form to support this approval requirement as well as AUK’s internal approval processes.
