Overall Process

Generally, the planning process for a study abroad experience should begin approximately one year prior to departure.  This gives the student time to adequately explore program options, to seek academic approval for programs and coursework, and to prepare for the many facets of living and studying in another country.  One of the most important steps in considering an international experience is to explore the opportunities or student interests, and to adequately plan. Student must make full consideration of the eligibility requirements and logistical components to enable participation.

The below Suggested Timeline is a rough guide to help interested students in preparing for an experience abroad.  Each of the below steps assume the student is successful in all of the ones listed previously.

3. Student completes and gets approval on Academic Planning Form: 1 yr to 10 months prior to departure
4. Student completes and gets approval on Study at Another Institution - Study Abroad & St Exchange form: 9 to 8 months prior to departure
5. Exchange Programs Only -Student Applies to AUK for Exchange Nomination, and completes process: 8 to 7 months prior to departure
6. Student Applies to Host institution (per host deadlines): 6 to 5 months prior to departure
7. Student begins visa process (per host guidelines): 5 to 3 months prior to departure
8. Student registers for courses (per host guidelines): 5 to 3 months prior to departure
