James McDougall is an Assistant Professor of English, Writing Program Coordinator, and Writing Center Director. He earned his Ph.D. in English at the University of Florida, completing a doctoral dissertation on transnational modern American poetry; his current research examines Chinese-language texts produced within the United States and representations of immigrant experiences in modern Chinese literature. At the University of Florida he also received training in TESOL and served as an editorial assistant for the journal Early Medieval China. His teaching interests include: composition and rhetoric, poetry and poetics, second language acquisition, modernism/postmodernism, world literature, American literature, Chinese literature, and film. Before becoming an academic, he worked as a technical writer, journal editor, sailor, drive-in movie theater manager, bookshop clerk, tutor, ESL instructor, tree-planter, and Peace Corps volunteer.
Dr. Malek Mohammad received a Ph.D. in English from Texas A&M University in December 2010. He joined AUK in May 2011 where, in addition to working at the Writing Center, he teaches English classes such as ENGL 101 (Critical Reading and Writing) and 102 (Writing and Information Literacy). Malek is also interested in research on literature, ethics, and human rights. He has been known on some festive occasions to describe his work at the Writing Center as an ecstatic experience.
Kheiriyeh Ahmadi is a part-time administrative assistant and staff consultant at the Writing Center. She graduated in spring 2008 with a B.A. in English Language and Literature from the American University of Kuwait with a concentration in Arabic Language and Literature. As an ex-student, she has experience working as a consultant in the Writing Center for two years. She likes to read different perspectives on diverse issues and subjects and learn new points of view. She finds helping students bring out their best in their papers a most valuable mission. She is planning to pursue a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics.
Nur Soliman is an AUK alum (2010) and a part-time staff consultant at the Writing Center. She comes back to AUK after a year of working at a museum. Nur is also a freelance arts journalist, and hopes to study comparative literature at graduate school in the near future. At the Writing Center, Nur hopes to help students gain confidence in their own ability to learn how to read, write, and learn.
Nader Abdullah is majoring in English Language and Literature and intending to minor in Performing Arts. He is of mixed Kuwaiti and British descent, having lived a good portion of his life in England, and recently was awarded a scholarship from the Kuwaiti government to continue his studies here. He currently presides over the AUK Drama Club, directing and participating in theatrical performances by and for students as well as helping to encourage and prepare amateur student actors to participate in campus wide events for other clubs. This is his second semester working as a consultant in the Writing Center and he enjoys the challenge of helping other students improve their writing, and considers it valuable work experience for a future career in teaching.
Isha Sadiq Haider is a senior double majoring in Accounting and Finance at AUK. Apart from her recently becoming a Writing Consultant at the Writing Lab of The American University of Kuwait, she is a dedicated Copy-Editor and Journalist working for her university publication, The Voice of AUK. She is a published poet in the AUKuwait Review, and is proud of her co-curricular achievements. Primarily, she prefers writing English poetry, but is also involved in writing 'poems of substance,' as she defines them, in her mother tongue. Since her currently pursued degrees do not have much of an 'English' facet to them, she believes she has been blessed with linguistic intelligence so that she can utilize it to develop the literal voice of the students of AUK, leave alone better adapting to the aura surrounding conventional grammatical intricacies herself.
Sally Zaghloul is a sophomore student at AUK double majoring in Accounting and Finance. She has lived in Kuwait her entire life. She enjoys helping others and is a good listener. Her passion towards reading made her in love with writing. She believes that self-motivation is the key to succeed. She is inspired by David Viscott quote "If you could get up the courage to begin, you have the courage to succeed."
Sara Soliman is a junior at AUK studying Graphic Design. She has worked at the Writing Centre for the past three semesters and is the Editor-in-Chief of the AUKuwait Review. In her free time Sara loves to draw and play the flute and piano. She believes writing to be one of the most welcoming forms of art and hopes to encourage students to feel more at ease and grow more confident when writing.
Shloka Ranjan Kini is a third year student at Dartmouth College who is interning for the Fall semester at AUK. She is majoring in Computer Science and plans to pursue pre-medical studies. She has interests in business, technology, and educational media. Shloka love music and plays the piano, guitar, and alto saxophone; she has also been a singer and a dancer from a young age. At Dartmouth, she has participated in various research and teaching opportunities. When it comes to writing, Shloka has had many good and bad experiences, but first started enjoying it in the eighth grade.
Dana Banddar is a writing consultant and a junior pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Communication and Media along with a concentration in Journalism. She has a passion for learning, and knowing more always revives her. She believes that life is a challenging journey but its beauty lies in those moments that follow overcoming a challenge. Before the next one knocks on your door, you have the choice of becoming more tolerant and understanding. The tougher you struggle, the more patience you will need to find happiness and embrace it again.
Alia Mustafa Aref is a writing consultant working at the Writing Center of AUK. She is a senior majoring in English Language and Literature with a concentration in Psychology. Currently she serves as president of the Kuwaiti chapter of the International English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta. In addition to English, Alia is also interested in Art, which has prompted her to participate in various exhibitions at AUK. Alia believes that everyone has the capacity and the talent to write, all people need is guidance; which is where the Writing Center comes into play. She encourages students to be more confident in writing what they really think because all opinions matter regardless of prejudice. Writing is a learning experience which sets free not only body and mind but spirit as well.
Bader Abuamarah is a Communications Junior at AUK. Bader transferred from Michigan State University last year. His hobbies range from music production to interpretive dance. English has been a hobby of Bader's from a very young age, clear in his participation in poetry and creative writing competitions in Middle School and High School, at ASK and AIS respectively.
Joshua Williams is a senior and a writing consultant at the Writing Center. He is an American transfer student currently trudging his way through a B.A. in English Literature. His primary focus is writing creatively. He cautions all fellow writers not to shun clichés but to master them.
Nada Bedir is a senior at AUK majoring in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Accounting. As a writing consultant Nada enjoys assisting students develop their writing skills. She also works at the Tutoring Center where she tutors business courses. This year, Nada is the L.E.A.D. Head Facilitator where she organizes workshops that provide students with tools to use in their studies and future careers. Nada thinks that students should seize every opportunity they can during their stay at AUK.
