IEP Instructor

Position Title: IEP Instructor
Classification: Intensive English Program - Fulltime
Salary Grade: Instructor
Reports To: Director of Intensive English Program
Primary Relationships: Director, Assistant to the Director, Lab Assistant, Students

Objective:
Under the direction of the Director, Intensive English Program (IEP), this position is responsible for planning, teaching and evaluating assigned day and evening instruction to students enrolled in non-credit IEP courses in accordance with American University of Kuwait (AUK) curriculum, with assistance from the Director; for maintaining student class records: for fulfilling administrative duties such as with IEP orientation, assessment and registration as required and/or requested by the Director; and for participating in professional development activities, such as workshops and meetings.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach up to 20 hours per week, Sunday through Thursday, in an intensive English program. Courses may include various levels of grammar, reading, writing, listening, speaking and/or pronunciation.
  • Responsible for lesson preparation and curriculum and materials development associated with the overall program and course(s) taught.
  • Submit class syllabus for each course taught and evaluate course textbook(s).
  • Monitor and report student progress including, but not limited to accurate and timely grading and attendance record keeping.
  • Attend staff meetings, placement testing, student orientation, staff development and in-service training and extracurricular activities as assigned.
  • Keep office hours as necessary.
  • Adhere to and support the goals and mission of the program and be highly motivated and enthusiastic to teach non-native English language learners.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Strong academic preparation: MA/MS in TESOL or related field with TESOL certification and/or experience.
  • Related Fields: linguistics, applied linguistics, foreign language, English, Education.
  • Three years minimum teaching experience in a US-based, college or university-level, intensive ESL for academic purposes program.
  • Strong, comprehensive knowledge of grammar, writing, reading, listening, speaking, and pronunciation strategies and methods including demonstrated excellence in teaching and ability to apply the use of instructional technology in the classroom required.

Skills:

  • Good computer skills for course preparation and execution, i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, e-mail, CALL, WebCT, Syllabase, etc.
  • Demonstratively strong classroom management, organizational and planning skills.
  • Native speaker fluency: good command of written and spoken English required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work collaboratively in creative situations, Professional involvement (TESOL, affiliate TESOL, NAFSA, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience teaching English-as-a-foreign-language overseas preferred.
  • Good organizer, positive team member, and an ability to interact in cross-cultural relationships required.
Abilities:

  • Deliver clear, concise directions and explanations required.
  • Work flexible hours.
  • Work collaboratively in creative situations.
  • Be culturally sensitive, and interact in cross-cultural environments.
  • Derive personal satisfaction from and enthusiasm for teaching international students.
  • Empathy for the problems associated with the learning of English as a second language.

Faculty Openings AY2012-2013

The American University of Kuwait (AUK) is a private university in Kuwait organized on the U.S. model of undergraduate liberal arts education. The medium of instruction is English. The University is accredited by the Council for Private Universities of the Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education. AUK also has a Memorandum of Understanding with Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and is working towards U.S. accreditation. AUK admitted its first students in September 2004 and currently has over 2,000 students and approximately130 UG faculty members.

The University is seeking terminally qualified faculty committed to excellence in teaching, scholarly research, and service. American education and/or teaching experience are required as is evidence of research activity. English native speakers are preferred. Outstanding communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and effective use of classroom media and technology are expected. Faculty rank will be determined by the candidate's degree and previous employment history. Successful candidates will teach undergraduate classes to majors and non-majors of diverse cultural backgrounds, participate in student advising, honor office hours, and serve on faculty committees.

DIVISION OF BUSINESS & ECONOMICS

Marketing (Position Code No. 11-101- AUKWEB12): Rank open; Ph.D. in Marketing, preferably from a US university with accredited Business programs is required. Also, good record of teaching and research in the US in the field of Marketing or related fields is required. Major duties include teaching a variety of marketing courses, particularly in marketing research, supply chain management, consumer behavior, and Marketing Strategy. In addition, conducting research, student advising, and University services are expected.

Finance (Position Code No. 11-102- AUKWEB12): Rank open; Ph.D. in Finance, preferably from a US university. Priority will be given to faculty with good teaching and research experience in finance. Responsibilities include teaching and research in the finance program which is currently designed for under-graduate students, student advising, committee work, University service and assisting in day-to-day management of the program.

Management (Position Code No. 11-103- AUKWEB12): Rank open; Ph.D. in Management, from a US university with accredited business program is required. Also, good record of teaching and research in the US in the field of Management, International Business or related fields is required. Major duties include teaching a variety of management courses. Priority will be given to candidates with prior experience in teaching business research methods, entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, and change management or related courses. Additional duties include conducting research, student advising, and University service.

Human Resource Management (Position Code No. 11-104- AUKWEB12): Rank open; Ph.D. in Management from a US university with accredited business program is required. Also required: a minimum of 18 graduate hours in human resource management and a good record of teaching and research in the US in the field of Human Resources, Organizational Behavior, or related fields. Major duties include teaching a variety of human resources and management courses. Additional duties include conducting research, student advising, and University service.

Accounting (Position Code No. 11-105- AUKWEB12): Rank open; Ph.D. in Accounting is required, from a US university with accredited business program. CPA or other professional certification is an advantage. Good teaching record and evidence of research activity in the US are required. Applicants able to teach auditing and/or Management and Financial Accounting are preferred. Duties include teaching a variety of undergraduate accounting courses, advising students, and university service.

DIVISION OF HUMANITIES & ARTS

Graphic Design Program

Graphic Design (Position Code No. 11-201- AUKWEB12)
: The Graphic Design Program at AUK, Division of Arts and Humanities is seeking candidates for full time Assistant Professor of Graphic Design positions to begin August 2012. The successful candidates will be expected to teach graphic design core and foundation courses at all levels in a developing undergraduate BA degree program. They will also be expected to contribute in their area of specialization in one or more of the following areas: digital media, graphic design history and/or photography. Candidates should be comfortable teaching undergraduates in a multi-cultural context with a focus in foundations. Other responsibilities include: engage in research, serve as an academic advisor to Graphic Design majors, contribute to curriculum and program assessment and development. Candidates must have a graduate degree in graphic design (MFA), teaching experience as well as a demonstrated record of professional design practice recognized through publications, exhibitions or equivalent. Interested candidates should submit a completed application as stated above in addition to 10-20 examples of personal work and 10-20 examples of student work.

English Program

English (Position Code No. 11-202- AUKWEB12) The American University of Kuwait (AUK) is seeking faculty members committed to excellence in teaching and scholarly research for non-tenure track positions in English: open rank; Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, English, Literature, or Linguistics required. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate writing courses such as Freshman Composition, Research Writing, and Business Writing to a diverse student body. There will be opportunities to teach upper-division literature, rhetoric, and linguistic courses to undergraduate English majors. Successful candidates will have a minimum of three years experience teaching college-level writing, an excellent teaching record, a strong background in writing pedagogy, and a commitment to lower-division teaching.

One of the positions will also be the Writing Program Coordinator. Strong leadership skills required and administrative experience preferred. In addition to teaching, other duties include: scheduling, program assessment, curriculum development, coordination with Intensive English Program.

Communication & Media Program

PR and Advertising (Position Code No. 11-203- AUKWEB12): rank open. Teach introductory and advanced courses in public relations and advertising. The ideal candidate would be a practitioner and a scholar who can balance the theoretical aspects of the field with its practical applications. Practical experience in PR/or and Advertising an asset. Ph.D. preferred, terminal degree required.

Spanish Program

Spanish (Position Code No. 11-204- AUKWEB12): The American University of Kuwait is looking for a Full time faculty to teach introductory courses in Spanish language starting Fall 2012. Candidates should be fluent in English, dynamic, enthusiastic and trained to teach with technology and the communicative approach. College teaching experience and PhD preferred.

DIVISION OF SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING

Biology (Position Code No. 11-301- AUKWEB12): Rank open: Ph.D. in Biology or a related field is required. The successful candidate will teach introductory and intermediate courses in Biology to non-majors. Other responsibilities include research & service to the Division and University and/or to the community. Successful candidates will have an excellent teaching record, a commitment to lower-division teaching, and an active program of research appropriate for a Liberal Arts Institution.

Computer Engineering (Position Code No. 11-302- AUKWEB12): Rank open; Ph.D. in Computer Engineering or a related field required, industry experience a plus. The successful candidate will teach a variety of undergraduate classes. Duties will also include undergraduate research, and service to the University and or to the community. Our newly established Computer Engineering program was launched in Fall09 and it closely follows the ACM/IEEE Computing Curriculum Computer Engineering 2004 recommendations. We are working towards ABET accreditation.

Computer Science & Information Systems (Position Code No. 11-303- AUKWEB12): Rank open; Ph.D. in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field is required. Teaching and professional industry experiences are a plus. The successful candidate will teach a variety of undergraduate classes. Duties will also include undergraduate research, and service to the University and or to the community. Our program closely follows the ACM/IEEE Computing Curriculum Computer Science 2001 recommendations. We are working towards ABET accreditation.
