Over 120 new teachers from 12 different Kuwait schools were welcomed to Kuwait on August 29 and 30 at a special "Welcome to Kuwait" program organized by the American University of Kuwait (AUK) Center for Continuing Education (CCE).
"There is such a short time between when teachers arrive from overseas and when they start teaching," explains event organizer Lynda Abdul Raheem. "Schools have to focus on orienting teachers to their classrooms, resources, etc.. They often don't have time to do a more general orientation to Kuwaiti culture nor to give them an overview of teaching in Kuwaiti classrooms or how to best relate to Kuwaiti children and their parents. So, the Center for Continuing Education provides this program as a service to the schools and their new teachers."
The "Welcome to Kuwait" event is just one of many programs AUK has planned for the upcoming year for teachers, counselors and parents.
"Helping educators keep up to date and learn new skills and techniques is a major focus for us," says CCE Director Dave McHardy. "Teachers play such an important role in our society; so, we are committed to serving their needs."
Participants in the event were treated to free food and drinks from Starbucks and Le Pain Quotidien and each left with a free mobile telephone line provided by Wataniya.
"We are extremely grateful to our sponsors," explained Kenya Purcell, CCE Program Coordinator. "To provide high-quality programs at affordable prices, we need them. We are sincerely hoping that organizations and companies will see teacher professional development as a cause worth investing in and will contact us about future sponsorship."
AUK's next teacher workshop will be "Teaching during Ramadan" and will be offered just before Ramadan begins in mid-September. People interested in attending or getting more information are encouraged to call the AUK Center for Continuing Education at 224-8398.
