The AUK Library Holds an Open House and Launches the AUK Repository

The Library at AUK held an Open House on Tuesday, February 9, for members of the AUK community. The purpose of the event was to introduce the community to the latest equipment and facilities available at the AUK Library, and to engage with the visitors through a variety of activities and contests.

The event activities included online demos and workshops that featured eBooks and other databases, an exhibition of posters created by the Intensive English Program (IEP) and the First Year Experience (FYE), and games such as "The Spinning Wheel" - a trivia game with questions about resources available in the AUK Library and a wheel to spin for prizes, and "The Thinkers Show" - a game that requires participants to identify literary characters based on a series of questions asked. There was also a raffle drawing that gave attendees a chance to win iPads, Kindles, and gift vouchers. The Open House concluded with a musical performance by the group "The Hashtags" - a local music band whose members include several AUK students.

This year's Open House coincided with the launching of the AUK Repository - an online archive database that hosts intellectual output of faculty/staff members, in addition to students' projects and other digital collections. "The AUK Repository will include a wide range of materials that reflect the intellectual wealth of the university, such as journal articles, conference papers and book chapters," explained the. Library Director, Ms. Asma Alkanan, adding "we are currently working with colleges/departments to identify content that is subject for inclusion in the repository. This will maximize accessibility to content created by our own community."

Academic resource vendors and publishers were present through their local agents in Kuwait. Naseej, a major supplier for library products in the region participated in the event and provided promotional materials and short demos for online databases that are available at AUK Library. Naseej also sponsored the raffle's top prize, an Ipad Air, while Virtus Group, who represent SAGE, Lexis-Nexis, and Emerald databases, offered the Kindle Fire prize.

The AUK Library holds more than 42,000 print items in different disciplines, in addition to thousands of eBooks and other electronic resources. Since its existence, the Library has undergone physical and technological upgrades to cater for the growing academic and technological needs of the AUK community.
