AUK Professor Dr. Amro Nour Fellow at Dartmouth College

24th Jul 2022 | by the Department of PR & Marketing

Assistant professor of electrical engineering at AUK, Dr. Amro Nour spent almost three months as a fellow at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, USA. Throughout his fellowship, Dr. Amro worked on two projects—one focused on a collaboration with Dr. Fridon Shubitidze, associate professor at Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering on the use of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) hyperthermia for the treatment of deep tissue tumors. The objective of this research was to optimize the size, frequency, composition, and configuration of external electromagnetic energy source to achieve desirable heat in cancerous cells and to minimize unwanted heat in normal tissue. The second project was a classification system that could be used to classify and extract dangerous objects left behind in soil. This technology reduces the costs of soil extraction and could be used for various purposes. This project is beneficial to Kuwait as it can help with leftovers from the Gulf War, and possibly finding oil fields and/or faulty oil pipes.

Commenting on his experience at Dartmouth, Dr. Amro said, “The Dartmouth-AUK Fellowship has presented me with a great opportunity to have access to state-of-the-art scientific research facilities and to world-class researchers in one of the top Ivy League research institutions. This kind of opportunity where educators and researchers collaborate is one of the key factors in the constant advancement of science and education.”

Dartmouth College is the international partner institution to AUK. The two institutions have worked closely together since 2003, when they signed a Memorandum of Understanding that facilitated a series of advisory, consultative, and cooperative projects. The initial agreement was recently renewed for a fourth time in April 2018 to extend through 2022.

Dr. Amro is the thirteenth AUK faculty member to participate in the Dartmouth-AUK Faculty Fellowship program, which has brought an AUK faculty member to Dartmouth each summer since 2009 for mentorship and collaboration.
