Shareefa Al-Adwani

Associate Professor of Political Science

Dr. Shareefa Abdullah Al-Adwani is an assistant professor of political science in the Department of International Relations at the American University of Kuwait. At the University of Virginia, she double majored in foreign affairs and Asian and Middle Eastern studies and she obtained a master’s degree in international relations at the University of Chicago, both while on the Kuwait MoHE Merit Scholarship. She then completed her PhD in political science at the University of California, Davis in June 2016, focusing on the fields of international relations and quantitative methods. Dr. Al-Adwani has over fifteen years of experience teaching at the college level, has over a dozen publications, and had organized a Gulf Studies Symposium that welcomed international scholars and their academic paper presentations in her previous position as AUK’s director of the Center for Gulf Studies.  For two years, Dr. Al-Adwani consulted as a scientific advisor for international programs at the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences.  She is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Saud Al-Nasser Al-Sabah Kuwait Diplomatic Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  At AUK, she teaches courses related to Kuwait’s foreign policy, international law and organizations, politics and women in the Middle East, and quantitative methods.
