Ali Roumani
Assistant Professor of Computer Science
Dr. Roumani is an assistant professor in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) at the American University of Kuwait (AUK). Previously, Dr. Roumani was an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at Gulf University for Science & Technology (GUST), Kuwait from 2012 to June 2023. He was also an adjunct assistant professor at Bindley Bioscience Center in Discovery Park at Purdue University, USA, from 2012 to 2020.
At AUK, Dr. Roumani serves on the college Curriculum and Assessment Committee (CAC), in addition to supervising a team of students for the CS Capstone project course. Before coming to AUK, Dr. Roumani worked at GUST University, where he served on various committee including Faculty senate, College of Science Council Committee, the department ABET accreditation and Curriculum Committee, and the Appointment Committee. He also volunteers as an IT consultant for local K-12 school in Kuwait. He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery in Data (SIGKDD), and the IEEE Computer Society.
Dr. Roumani has over 20 years of extensive expertise in computational techniques and databases and their applications. Before returning to Kuwait, Dr. Roumani was the Head of the Computational Bioinformatics Core at Purdue University in the U.S. where he was leading and architecting various projects in life-sciences data analysis and discovery.
Research interests:
Dr. Roumani's research interests are in:
- Bioinformatics and data mining, including information retrieval, knowledge discovery, and large-dataset analysis.
- Human-Computer Interaction and the effectiveness of interactive web-based systems on user behavior, especially in healthcare and education.
- Studying sustainable online communities and the effective use of Web 2.0 technology for information management and dissemination.
- The nearest-neighbor search problem and collaborative filtering in high dimensions using matrix decomposition and linear algebra techniques
- Efficient algorithm design and performance analysis, and synthetic simulation-data generation
