About Center for Gulf Studies
What We Do
In the pursuit of our objectives and scholarly interests, the Center for Gulf Studies at AUK engages in the following activities:

Academic Research

  • AUK faculty conducting research on the Gulf may join the Center as Faculty Associates, while local and regional scholars may join as Research Affiliates. We provide our scholarly members with the moral and material support and resources needed to conduct original research on the Gulf--individually or cooperatively, and/or in collaboration with scholars or institutes from around the region and wider world.
  • We offer space for visiting scholars and researchers to work at and be affiliated with the Center for Gulf Studies while conducting research on Kuwait. AUK is also affiliated with the Fulbright-Hays Program, which is administered through the CGS.

Academic Events

  • We regularly organize a variety of academic events such as lectures, panel discussions, roundtables, and workshops that bring together scholars, public figures, civil society actors, and students from Kuwait, the region, and the wider world to engage in intellectual dialogue and debate on various topics.
  • Though most of our activities aim to examine the Gulf from a regional and comparative perspective, we also recognize that our location and grounding in Kuwait gives us the opportunity to examine at least one part of the Gulf in greater depth and detail.
  • The Gulf Studies Symposium is a meeting of worldwide Gulf scholars and researchers hosted biennially by the CGS, inaugurated in 2013. Each symposium is based on a particular scholarly theme that is timely both to the region and to the field of Gulf studies. Our objective is to bring together local, regional, and international researchers to engage in interdisciplinary discussions on diverse social, cultural, and political issues relating to the Gulf. The GSS is a venue for scholars who conduct original, qualitative, and in-depth research to share and receive critical feedback on their work, and to learn more about what other scholars in their field are working on. Our goal is to help shape the Gulf studies research agenda by constantly identifying and drawing attention to the subjects on which the most unique and interesting research is being pursued.
