Shereef Abu Al Maati

Associate Professor of Computer Science & Information Systems

Dr. Shereef Abu Al-Maati is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the American University of Kuwait (AUK). Dr. Abu Al-Maati joined AUK as the first Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) professor in 2004 when the university first opened its doors. He was the Founding Division Head of the Sciences & Engineering Division from 2006-2012 and Department Chair of CSIS from 2012-2015. Prior to joining AUK he was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of West Georgia, USA, where he taught at the graduate and undergraduate level from 2000-2004. During his time at the University of West Georgia, Dr. Abu Al-Maati taught summer programs at the John Hopkins University and Georgia Governors Honors Program for gifted and talented students. Prior to entering Academia in 2000, he worked in industry at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research alongside IBM, Martin Marietta Data Systems, the US Navy and the Kuwait Air Force on automating the Operational Readiness of the Kuwait Air Force, among other projects and clients. Dr. Abu Al-Maati earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the American University in Washington DC and continued his education at the Florida Institute of Technology where he received his Masters of Science and PhD in Computer Science. He has numerous publications, has been a PhD advisor, has been a consultant in industry, served on journal editorial boards and received two fellowships from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in 2006 & 2007. He currently serves as a board member representing the private universities in Kuwait at the Kuwait National Bureau for Academic Accreditation and Education Quality Assurance under the Ministry of Higher Education. He is also a proud alumni of his high school in Kuwait, the American School of Kuwait celebrating its 50th anniversary.
