Arabian Heritage Project host lecture on Yemeni music

The American University of Kuwait's Arabian Heritage Project (AHP) presented a lecture on Yemeni music titled 'Sounds of Yemen' by Dr. Nizar Ghanem on Monday January 24. Dr. Ghanem discussed the historical significance of Yemen and its position as a crossroads of cultures, recognizing how Yemeni music has been embellished by this colorful interchange, while at the same time, maintaining its strong Yemeni character. He closed the lecture by playing the oud (lute) and singing an old Yemeni song followed by an open discussion with the audience. Dr. Ghanem said, "Giving this lecture at AUK has been a wonderful experience and I especially enjoyed my time with the students and subsequent discussions with Kuwaiti scholars who were in attendance." Dr. Lisa Urkevich, Director of the Arabian Heritage Project said, "This is the first time that we have had a scholar visit us from the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula, and Dr. Ghanem's research opens a new perspective for our center. Culturally, especially musically, there is more in common between Kuwait and Yemen than many people know, and we look forward to future collaborations with Dr. Ghamen and his colleagues from the southern regions".
