AUK Holds Groundbreaking Conference on Trauma & Resilience

The Counseling Center at AUK hosted a pioneering conference that delved into the issues of trauma and resilience. This noteworthy event brought together professionals, researchers, practitioners, and students from diverse backgrounds to explore the latest advancements in the field. 

Dr. George Chedid, director of the Counseling Center, set the tone for the conference with his opening remarks, extending a warm welcome to attendees and expressing heartfelt appreciation for their participation in this invaluable forum for collaboration and knowledge exchange. 

The conference featured esteemed speakers from abroad, including Dr. Theodore Waters from NYU Abu Dhabi; Dr. Maria Campo Redondo from United Arab Emirates University; and Dr. Kate Ellis from the American University in Cairo. Each speaker presented insightful perspectives on trauma and resilience, covering topics such as attachment development, relational approaches to healing trauma, and culturally appropriate interventions in the Middle East.  

In addition to hosting renowned international speakers, the conference also showcased the impactful contributions of local personalities. HH Sheikha Intisar AlSabah discussed the unique work of the Intisar Foundation, helping women affected by war and violence through drama therapy. Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa also talked about transforming emotions through cognitive change, captivating the audience with his innovative ideas. 

The conference concluded with a dynamic panel discussion featuring Dr. Joanne Hands from the Kuwait Counseling Center; Dr. Sami Ouanes, consultant psychiatrist from MindWell Clinic; Dareen Tawil, school counselor from the American United School (AUS), and Mais Anshasi, instructional coach from Al-Bayan Bilingual School (BBS).  

AUK President, Dr. Rawda Awwad, along with deans and faculty members, attended the conference. With participants from diverse backgrounds and institutions across Kuwait, the event emphasized the relevance and importance of the topic. Engaging discussions among attendees showcased the high value and quality of the presentations. 

The "Trauma and Resilience" conference was more than just a gathering; it was a resounding success that underscored AUK's commitment to fostering collaboration, learning, and dialog in the realm of mental health.
