From Theory to Practice: Hands-On Calligraphy with Renowned Artists at AUK

Dr. Fahad Dhawi, assistant professor of graphic design at the AUK, recently hosted a series of guest lectures for his Arabic & Islamic Calligraphy course. Distinguished calligraphers offered students hands-on experience and unique insights into various calligraphy styles and techniques.

The series began with calligrapher Abdulaziz Alameer, who captivated the class with his expertise in illustration and calligraphy. Alameer shared his journey and demonstrated the Sunbuli script along with other styles, personalizing the experience by calligraphing students' names. He provided valuable tips on pen handling, enriching the students' understanding and appreciation of the Sunbuli style.

Following Alameer, Calligrapher Jassim Alnaserallah delivered an engaging lecture and practical workshop on Thuluth, Rayhani, and Naskh scripts. Emphasizing the importance of correct pen usage and patience, he linked the art of calligraphy to architectural principles. Jassim concluded by showcasing his works, including a notable calendar design, broadening students' perspectives on the contemporary applications of calligraphy.

Next in the series, calligrapher Areej Alsalem focused on the intricate Diwani script. Alsalem discussed the complexity of Diwani and Diwani Jeli, highlighting the necessity of proper pen handling, patience, and precision. She demonstrated the use of silk fibres in ink and the importance of fine stroke details, offering hands-on assistance to help students refine their techniques.

Concluding the series, Calligrapher Jassim Me’raj adopted a roundtable discussion format, engaging students in conversations about their experiences and perceptions of calligraphy. Me’raj explored the theoretical and philosophical aspects of calligraphy, showcasing his recent project and encouraging students to incorporate his work into their final projects. He emphasized calligraphy's reflection of Arabic culture, leaving students with a deeper understanding of the art form.

Through these guest lectures, the students gained a comprehensive and immersive experience, enhancing their skills and appreciation for Arabic and Islamic calligraphy.
