AUK Appoints Dr. Stavros Hadjisolomou as Associate Dean for General Education and Chair of the First Year Experience

The appointment of Dr. Stavros Hadjisolomou as AUK's recently inaugurated Associate Dean for General Education and Chair of the First Year Experience (FYE) represents a substantial stride in the University’s unwavering dedication to fostering academic excellence. With years of administrative experience and a pivotal role in securing AALE re-accreditation for the College of Arts and Sciences in 2021, Dr. Stavros brings a wealth of expertise to his new roles. His commitment to academic excellence and strategic vision aligns seamlessly with the College's goals. 

In this exclusive interview, we delve deeper into Dr. Stavros's vision, plans, and insights as he embarks on these important responsibilities.

1. As the new associate dean, what are your primary goals and priorities for the general education program at AUK? 

In this role, my main focus is to oversee the successful implementation of AUK's new general education curriculum while ensuring it aligns with the University's commitment to providing students with a well-rounded education grounded in the Liberal Arts. I will collaborate closely with the three colleges, academic units, and student affairs to ensure that our general education program remains dynamic, adaptable, and attuned to the diverse needs of our student body and the rapidly changing global landscape. Key priorities include implementing the new structure for the curriculum, establishing effective assessment methods, and emphasizing the significance of general education in fostering engaged citizens committed to lifelong learning.

2. In the announcement, there is mention of implementing a new general education curriculum. Could you provide some insights into what this curriculum entails and how it will benefit students?

Divided into three tiers, the new general education curriculum is intentionally designed to adapt and grow with students as they progress through their academic journey. In Tier 1, the Core Curriculum, students focus on developing essential intellectual and academic skills such as reasoning, written and oral communication, and information literacy. Moving on to Tier 2, the Thematic Areas, students can delve deeper into various fields such as arts, humanities, social sciences, global studies, and sciences while applying their previously acquired skills. Finally, at the Senior Level of our curriculum, students synthesize their learning through engaging projects, seminars, and real-world experiences. 

Our courses are designed to be flexible and multidisciplinary so students can explore academic disciplines and integrate concepts. Our curriculum goes beyond knowledge acquisition; it aims to equip our students with the necessary tools, skills, and mindset to navigate an increasingly complex world while making meaningful contributions and taking on leadership roles. 
 
 
3. What message would you like to convey to the AUK community as you step into these new leadership positions, and what can they expect from your leadership?

I feel honored and excited to be part of a journey that will shape the future of AUK and, most importantly, the lives of our students. My message to the AUK community is one of collaboration and ambition. We are embarking on a path to enhance a strong educational experience, making it even more adaptable, inclusive, and innovative. As a strong believer in service leadership, I will prioritize listening, learning, and purposeful action in my role. Together, we will ensure that AUK remains a place where ideas thrive, and potential is realized. Every student, faculty member, and staff member plays a role in this educationally enriching experience, one filled with knowledge, innovation, and remarkable achievements.
