AUK Hosts IEEE EDUCON 2023
AUK hosted the IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON 2023). Held for the first time in Kuwait, the University accommodated approximately 200 international conference attendees. EDUCON is one of the flagship conferences of the IEEE Education Society. EDUCON 2023 was sponsored by KIPCO and its subsidiaries, Burgan Bank and Gulf Insurance Company - GIG (premier sponsors); and platinum sponsors MathWorks, Binary Logic, and ABET; along with Qatar Airways as the official carrier. IEEE Region 8 also contributed to the organization of EDUCON, while IEEE-Kuwait Section was the technical sponsor of the event.
During the opening ceremony, AUK president, Dr. Rawda Awwad gave a speech where she prompted the audience to consider the implications of emerging technologies and rapid changes in the future of education, “As experts, innovators, academicians, industry people, public and private sector stakeholders, we must come together much more often, as we are doing here in the next serval days, to share the significance of innovation and its impact, while holding onto the interdisciplinary importance of solving complex challenges we face today. As we move towards an era of rapid technological advancement, it is essential that we prepare ourselves and our students to navigate the changing landscape, with the introduction of AI only accelerating this process.”
The dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) and co-chair of EDUCON 2023, Dr. Amir Zeid, followed with a speech where he expressed his delight at the diversity of backgrounds and expertise represented in the conference, “We are honored to welcome around 200 participants from above 50 countries, across five continents to this year’s event. As we continue to provide high quality technical content and collaboration opportunities, we are confident that EDUCON will be an enriching and informative experience for all attendees.”
Representing the premier sponsor, KIPCO senior vice president of Communications and Investor Relations at KIPCO, Ms. Eman Al-Awadhi, underscored the company’s commitment to education, “Education is an important pillar of KIPCO’s portfolio. The establishment of the American University of Kuwait in 2003 marked our entry into this sector. Since then, we have been contributing to the education of young people in Kuwait through our network of K-12 schools and this university, shaping the future of the country through the quality of learning that we offer. We pride ourselves on upholding a culture of freedom of thought and expression, respect for individual rights and cultural diversity in our institutions.”
The conference featured a lineup of distinguished international keynote speakers who shared their expertise and insights on timely and pertinent topics in the field of engineering. They provided unique perspectives on emerging trends, new technologies, and best practices in the field.
Workshops, paper presentations, and roundtable discussions also took place to inform, inspire, and challenge attendees to broaden their knowledge and engage in meaningful conversation about the latest developments.
The IEEE EDUCON 2023 is the fourteenth in a series of conferences that rotate among central locations in IEEE Region 8 (Europe, Middle East, and Africa).
Held every year since 2010, EDUCON provides an opportunity to scientists, professional engineers, and students to present their work, publish their results, exchange ideas, and network for future scientific and industrial collaborations.
