Tutoring

WTC provides students with tutoring in various subjects through individual, small-group, or supplemental instruction sessions coordinated with faculty. Student employees are trained as peer tutors in order to help students improve their problem-solving and study skills, increase their understanding of course content, enhance their academic performance, and develop a positive attitude towards learning. The center’s peer tutor training program is certified by the College Reading & Learning Association’s International Tutor Training Program Certification (CRLA ITTPC). In addition to setting an internationally accepted standard of skills and training for tutors, the certification allows the center to certify individual tutors after completing the training requirements, providing recognition for their successful work from an international organization.

Personal Tutoring (one-on-one)

Students can schedule individual tutoring sessions with a tutor on TutorTrac (selecting the Personal Tutoring option).

Walk‐in students are welcome depending on tutors’ availabilities.

Individual tutoring sessions could be half an hour or an hour long depending on the student’s needs, scheduled appointment period, and walk-in traffic.

Group Tutoring

When a group of students are in need of similar assistance, a group session can be set up in one of the following ways:

  1. If the group size is between 2-4 students, one of the group members can schedule a group tutoring session via TutorTrac (selecting the Group Tutoring option).
  2. If the group is larger than 4 students, they may speak with the Tutoring Center staff requesting group tutoring. The TRC staff may schedule the session based on tutor availability.
  3. For certain highly-demanded courses, group tutoring sessions are held frequently and advertised accordingly.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions provide students with additional assistance to improve their performance in historically high risk courses.

The SI leader (a student or staff member) is appointed by the course instructor and is required to attend the class. The course instructor and SI leader need to be in constant communication regarding material to be covered in the SI session. The sessions take place regularly during a semester based on the arrangement with the instructor. The sessions usually include chapter-by-chapter instruction or exam review. There is no attendance policy for these sessions; anyone taking the course can attend voluntarily.

If you are a faculty member who is interested in Supplemental Instruction, kindly complete the online form. Please submit a request during the add/drop week of the semester to give us the best chance of being able to accommodate it.

The TRC staff will follow up via email to arrange for a meeting.
