AUK HR Department Launches New Career Portal
AUK Human Resources (HR) Department has officially launched a new career portal managed by the region-leading Applicant Tracking System (ATS) provider, Talentera. This is in line with the HR Department’s digital transformation initiative and Employer of Choice strategic goal.

ATS is a recruitment platform that helps streamline the hiring process for an organization from beginning to end. It handles tasks such as posting job openings to multiple job boards, storing applicant data, and screening applications for potential matches.

Each feature of an ATS is designed to improve the hiring process for both recruiters and candidates. Built-in communication channels and automated email reminders help recruiters communicate with candidates more consistently, which in turn helps candidates feel more connected and informed throughout the process.

HR senior director, Paul Bassil, expressed his enthusiasm towards the launch of the platform, “A new era of manpower management has begun, and I look forward to the AUK community being a part of it. Through this brand-new initiative, the process of applying and following up on job applications at AUK will be made more efficient, transparent, and accurate. The journey for the applicants and the recruiters will be enjoyable and in line with the equal employment opportunity standard.”

The HR Department is consistent in their efforts to provide high quality services to its existing and potential employees. The launch of this new career portal is indicative of their ongoing dedication to improving AUK’s workplace culture.

AUK Professor Rita Merheb Showcases Products in Sixth Edition of Art3f International Contemporary Art Fair
Professor Rita Merheb, assistant professor of graphic design at the American University of Kuwait (AUK), participated and showcased her products in the sixth edition of Art3F International Contemporary Art Fair in Brussels, Belgium.

The Art3F is an annual international contemporary art fair held in various cities across Europe. Showcased in the exhibition was Professor Merheb’s “Moua’ayada Collection,” a set of ten plates with ten distinctive yet similar and cohesive designs. Each plate is adorned with a different message and written in Kufi style, filling the outer edge of each plate in a stylish and innovative design.

Professor Merheb developed this design using a complicated and creative technique that makes use of the rigidity and straightness of Kufi type to create an eye-catching organic and rounded design.

Reflecting upon the exhibition, Professor Merheb highlighted how the art fair proved to be an invaluable experience, “Taking part in this group exhibition in which artists and designers participate from all over the world did not only mean that I was sharing my work and my techniques with them and shedding light on the beauty of Arabic type—including how it can be fused with product design—but, it was also communicating with other artists and documenting as much of their work as possible. This, for sure, was a huge opportunity for me to get a front-row view of the continuously evolving art scene in Europe and around the world. This by itself was an eye-opening learning experience for me, which I have benefited from personally, and will benefit my students by bringing all those findings into my classes.”

Professor Merheb’s participation in this international contemporary art fair is a testament to AUK’s high standard of education. AUK’s faculty continue to promote academic excellence, instilling values of professionalism and lifelong learning in students.

AUK Graduates Class of 2022
AUK held its graduation commencement for the class of 2022 on Monday, 28th November conferring the degrees on 510 graduates—185 of which were from the College of Arts and Sciences, 131 from the College of Business and Economics, and 194 from the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Amongst the 2022 cohort, 8 graduates were awarded highest honors (summa cum laude), 25 awarded high honors (magna cum laude), and 40 awarded honors (cum laude).

Held at The Arena in 360 Mall, the graduation ceremony was attended by Sheikha Dana Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, founder and chair of AUK's Board of Trustees, members of the AUK board of trustees, diplomats, dignitaries, and the parents of this year's graduates.

Following the national anthem and the Holy Quran recitation, AUK president, Dr. Rawda Awwad gave a speech where she explained the benefits that a liberal arts education has had on the graduates, “Our students today embraced AUK’s liberal arts values in every respect.  No matter what major they will graduate with today, every single one of them will be able to respond to the global challenges that require individuals to be original, resourceful, imaginative, inspirational, and innovative. Our students embody these qualities and will pursue their futures gracefully and, above all, with a sense of humility and care.”

This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Saeeda Jaffar, Senior Vice President and Group Country Manager of VISA for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region and member of AUK’s board of trustees was selected by Forbes as the top 50 most powerful businesswomen in the Middle East. In her keynote address, Dr. Saeeda Jaffar inspired the graduates to pursue continuous learning to seize all opportunities in an ever-changing world, “Replace fear with curiosity and keep asking questions. Keep on learning. I can’t stress how important this is. We live in a knowledge-based economy and it’s changing faster than anything we’ve ever seen before. The opportunities ahead are incredible. There is AI, intergalactic exploration, sustainability, web3, you name it. Every field is changing. Be bold and grab the opportunities that are out there. It can be a scary thought, to do something different, do something new. And that’s okay. It is about dealing with it and giving yourself the ability to say ‘you know what? I don’t have to have all the answers right now. I have to be okay with that. I will be bold, and I will get it done.’”

Following the keynote address, AUK’s dean of student affairs, Ms. Hala Al-Abdulrazzaq announced the class valedictorian, Ahmad Aldulaie who earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering with a 3.96 GPA. He supplemented his studies at AUK with programming courses that helped him win “Best Project Award” at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences spring 2022 capstone exhibition. During his speech, Ahmad addressed his peers and reflected upon their effort and dedication, “While our experiences during university years may differ, we are all able to stand here and celebrate our victory today because we had a goal in mind that we wanted to achieve no matter the odds which was to complete our bachelor’s degree, to become leaders in our respective fields, to have a significant impact on our society. Therefore, I remind you and myself that today does not mark an end, it marks the beginning of our next adventure, where we utilize the tools and skills that AUK equipped us with to achieve our goals and dreams.”

The event then proceeded to the part of the ceremony most anticipated by the students—the distribution of their earned degrees. Upon the recommendations of the deans – Dr. Ali Charara, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Ralph Palliam, Dean of the College of Business and Economics; and Dr. Amir Zeid, Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, President Awwad conferred upon the graduates their respective degrees. The graduates were then awarded their diplomas by President Awwad and respective college deans.

In keeping with the academic tradition, the graduates were requested to shift their tassels from right to left, thereby marking their official graduation from AUK. As the ceremony drew to its conclusion, the graduating class celebrated the occasion and took photos with their parents.

AUK HR Department Launch Wellness Campaign for Staff
AUK Human Resources Department (HR) launched multiple initiatives that promoted wellness and healthy daily habits among staff members. The campaign, titled, “Together We Grow Healthier,” provided employees with recreational opportunities to improve their physical and mental health.

With the goal of promoting healthy eating habits, various exercises, and community activities, the HR Department has thus far launched three workshops, one of which being “Wellness Through Mindfulness” which provided staff exercises and practices that can be done at their desks to refresh their day.

The second activity was a cheese-tasting workshop that was exclusive to campus directors and served as an opportunity to develop AUK’s workplace culture. The third activity was a collaboration with the Office of Student Life where the HR Department launched a bootcamp to encourage physical activity.

Supplementing these efforts, HR also distributed healthy snacks wrapped in biodegradable material to all campus staff members.

AUK Holds Seminar for Business Capstone Students
Assistant professor of management, Dr. Nabeel Sawalha in AUK’s College of Business and Economics (CBE) organized a seminar for business capstone students. Presenting at the seminar were speakers Dr. Nada Alhasawai, a faculty member at Kuwait University in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Mr. Mohammed Almoathen, a professor of psychology and an organizational trainer; and Mr. Ahmed Fadhul, a social psychologist and consultant.

Discussed at the seminar was a new concept known as VMG (Value - Mind - Goal), founded and introduced by Dr. Alhasawai, Mr. Almoathen, and Mr. Fadhul. The concept of “Value” refers to the personal highest value that creates passion and purpose of life, allowing people to fulfill their desires. It is guided by personal inspiration that brings about goal clarity.

They also discussed the concept of “Mind,” which is an expression about the conscious (5%) and subconscious (95%) mental processes, activities, and the storage of thoughts. The subconscious mind influences feelings, behaviors, and actions. Regardless of this influence, the subconscious can be altered and changed through activating the conscious mind.

The final concept of “Goal” highlights the lifelong goals that should be driven by a person’s vision that comes from the imagination of a bright future. When these goals are linked to a person’s highest value, they will be attained through crafting an imagined and inspired roadmap. This becomes the key to transforming personal goals into grounded reality.

Dr. Alhasawai, Mr. Almoathen, and Mr. Fadhul concluded with the positive impact this framework has through enhancing the way people think in social and organizational settings.
