AUK CEAS Holds Annual Capstone Exhibition
AUK College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) held its third capstone exhibition that included students presenting their graduation projects, incorporating novel prototypes that combined their hardware and software skills. The event was open to students, alumni, parents, and industry representatives.   
  
A total of 16 groups showcased their projects through informative posters, research papers, leaflets, and video displays. Supervised by faculty members of the College, students presented a wide range of prototypes such as the Virtual Telepresence Robot, Smart Recycling Bin, Sign Language Translator, Intelligent Load Management, and Smart Irrigation System.  
 
The event concluded with an award ceremony in the AUK auditorium where CEAS dean, Dr. Mohammed El Abd, congratulated the students, “I am immensely proud of our graduating students this academic year. They have truly set a new standard with their exceptional projects, which span a diverse array of cutting-edge topics, including robotics, autonomous driving, the Internet of Things (IoT), security, energy optimization, and assistive technologies. The creativity, innovation, and dedication demonstrated by our students have been nothing short of inspiring."
 
A total of three winners were announced for the engineering category—the first-place winner was for project MSZ Prosthetic Arms, by Mariam AlQalsh, Shaikha AlHumoud, and Zeyad Hannawi, and supervised by Dr. Khalid Sultan, with Dr. Ali Bostani acting as co-supervisor.   
 
The second-place winner for the engineering project award was NU- Marine Life Monitoring and Exploration Submarine, by Tarek Dafar, Ahmed Hassan, Faisal Hassan, Abdalla ElGohary, and supervised by Dr. Mounib Khanafer with Eng. Ali Rady acting as co-supervisor.
   
The third-place winner was SkyPhoenix: The Anti-Drone Defense System by Naser Mahdi, Dana Alnobani, Mohammad Omar, Ahmed AboElhiba, and supervised by Dr. Mohammed El Abd with Eng. Abeer Imdoukh acting as co-supervisor.
 
AI-Based Intelligent System for Reliable Detection of Driver Drowsiness was the winning project award for the Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) category. The project was implemented by Fares Mohammad, Bader Al-Haran, Bader Al-Otaibi, Mohammad Ashkanani, and supervised by Dr. Aaron Rasheed Rababaah. 
 
Sign Language Translator was the winning project for the student choice award. The project was implemented by Nada Al Othaina, Shaha Al Shammari, Hana Ghonim, Mariam Shehadeh, and supervised by Dr. Seyed Esmaeili with Eng. Amal AlAteyah acting as co-supervisor. 

The success of this exhibition not only celebrates the hard work of the students but also sets a high benchmark for future cohorts. It reinforces AUK CEAS's commitment to excellence in education, research, and the continuous pursuit of innovation.

Engineering Excellence: AUK’s Award-Winning Innovations at ZURC2024
The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) at AUK showcased exceptional talent and innovation at the Zayed University Undergraduate Research Conference 2024 (ZURC2024). Students and recent graduates contributed eight capstone poster presentations. The conference, a gathering of young researchers from across the region, provided a vibrant platform for students to exhibit their academic prowess through poster presentations. Led by Dr. Ali Bostani, associate professor of electrical engineering, AUK’s presentations included three teams of current students and five teams of recent graduates.  

Two AUK teams won the Best Student Paper Award. The team “Skyphoenix” comprised of Naser Mahdi, Ahmed AboElhiba, Dana Alnobani, Mohammad Omar, and supervised by Dr. Mohammed El-Abd, impressed the judges with their innovative approach and thorough research methodology. The “SpeakSign” team, consisting of Shaha Al-Shammari, Hana Ghonim, Maryam Shehadeh, and Nada AlOthaina, under the guidance of Dr. Seyed Esmaeili, also received praise for their project’s creativity and potential impact.  
 
These achievements at ZURC2024 not only highlight the high caliber of AUK’s students and the exceptional mentorship of its faculty but also underscore the University’s commitment to advancing academic and research excellence. As AUK continues to foster and support scholarly pursuits within its community, the success at ZURC2024 serves as a testament to the potential and promising future of research at AUK.

AUK Men’s Basketball Team Excels at EuroMilano Tournament
AUK marked its fourth consecutive participation in the prestigious EuroMilano tournament, held recently in the vibrant city of Milan, Italy. This global sports event brought together 14 international colleges in spirited competition. 

The AUK men’s basketball team secured an impressive fifth place in the tournament. Their journey through the competition was marked by resilience, skill, and determination, reflecting the rigorous training and commitment of the team. 

Invited by the esteemed InterUniversities Sport Federation (IUSF), AUK athletes seized the opportunity to demonstrate their prowess in a two-day tournament. Playing a total of six games, the AUK team showcased remarkable consistency, engaging in a total of six games and emerging victorious in four of them. 

Mohammad Al-Saleh, senior sports coordinator at AUK’s Office of Student Life, emphasized the significance of such tournaments, “EuroMilano serves as a valuable platform for our students to showcase their talents on an international scale. These competitions play a crucial role in fostering growth and unity, promoting cultural exchange among participants from diverse backgrounds." 

As AUK continues to uphold its commitment to excellence in academics and extracurricular activities, the men’s basketball team’s success at EuroMilano stands as a testament to the University's unwavering pursuit of athletic prowess and global engagement.

Dr. Layla AlAmmar Explores Arab Literature and Identity at Qesati Event
Assistant professor of English literature at the AUK, Dr. Layla AlAmmar, was invited by Qesati, a renowned storytelling platform based in Kuwait, to lead a compelling discussion on Arab Literature and Identity. 

The session delved deeply into themes of identity, trauma, language, and literature, offering attendees a unique opportunity to engage with these critical issues.
Dr. AlAmmar shared valuable insights from her extensive journey in the literary world. Her dual perspective as a researcher and novelist provided a rich, multifaceted view of the subjects. 

She also provided new perspectives on cultural influences and the complex relationship between trauma and identity, particularly in the Arab world.

Her insightful contributions to the discussion, informed by both scholarly research and creative expression, reaffirm AUK's position as a hub for intellectual engagement and interdisciplinary dialogue.

From Theory to Practice: Hands-On Calligraphy with Renowned Artists at AUK
Dr. Fahad Dhawi, assistant professor of graphic design at the AUK, recently hosted a series of guest lectures for his Arabic & Islamic Calligraphy course. Distinguished calligraphers offered students hands-on experience and unique insights into various calligraphy styles and techniques.

The series began with calligrapher Abdulaziz Alameer, who captivated the class with his expertise in illustration and calligraphy. Alameer shared his journey and demonstrated the Sunbuli script along with other styles, personalizing the experience by calligraphing students' names. He provided valuable tips on pen handling, enriching the students' understanding and appreciation of the Sunbuli style.

Following Alameer, Calligrapher Jassim Alnaserallah delivered an engaging lecture and practical workshop on Thuluth, Rayhani, and Naskh scripts. Emphasizing the importance of correct pen usage and patience, he linked the art of calligraphy to architectural principles. Jassim concluded by showcasing his works, including a notable calendar design, broadening students' perspectives on the contemporary applications of calligraphy.

Next in the series, calligrapher Areej Alsalem focused on the intricate Diwani script. Alsalem discussed the complexity of Diwani and Diwani Jeli, highlighting the necessity of proper pen handling, patience, and precision. She demonstrated the use of silk fibres in ink and the importance of fine stroke details, offering hands-on assistance to help students refine their techniques.

Concluding the series, Calligrapher Jassim Me’raj adopted a roundtable discussion format, engaging students in conversations about their experiences and perceptions of calligraphy. Me’raj explored the theoretical and philosophical aspects of calligraphy, showcasing his recent project and encouraging students to incorporate his work into their final projects. He emphasized calligraphy's reflection of Arabic culture, leaving students with a deeper understanding of the art form.

Through these guest lectures, the students gained a comprehensive and immersive experience, enhancing their skills and appreciation for Arabic and Islamic calligraphy.

Dartmouth Professor Shares Research & Writing Insights with AUK Community
AUK recently hosted Dr. Fridon Shubitidze, a distinguished professor of Engineering from Dartmouth College, for a series of insightful talks and workshops.  

In one session exclusively for the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) faculty, Dr. Fridon delved into the multifaceted use of electromagnetic fields and waves in both geophysical exploration and medical advancements. He highlighted the potential of his research in these areas, sparking enthusiasm among attendees.  

Students enrolled in the Signals and Systems course also had the privilege of attending Dr. Fridon's lecture, titled From Maxwell's Equations to Sensing Technologies. This educational talk served as a bridge between theoretical concepts and practical implementations, inspiring future engineers, and scientists. 

Continuing his contributions, he shared his expertise in grant proposal writing during a workshop organized by the Office of Research and Grants (ORG). Faculty members gained valuable insights into crafting successful proposals, drawing from Dr. Fridon's extensive experience in securing funding for research projects.  

Equally significant was the enlightening research talk featuring Dr. Fridon as the keynote speaker. During the talk, he unveiled his groundbreaking research in developing advanced sensing technologies capable of detecting subsurface targets, spanning from unexploded ordnances to underground utilities. 

Dr. Fridon’s accolades, including the 2019 Medal of Honor from the President of Georgia, underscore his remarkable contributions to science and technology. His workshops not only equipped the AUK community with valuable skills but also reaffirmed the University's commitment to fostering research excellence.

Navigating Accessibility: Insights from AUK's AI Panel Discussion
The Office of Research and Grants (ORG) at AUK recently hosted a panel discussion titled, "How Artificial Intelligence Can Enhance Digital Accessibility." The event, held in the AUK Auditorium, aimed to highlight AI advancements and their potential to improve digital accessibility for all, including those with disabilities. 

Dr. Ahmad Alsaber, assistant professor of management and ORG assistant director, opened the event, with Ms. Afsah Abdullah moderating the discussion. Experts in AI and digital accessibility included Dr. Zainab Al-Meraj, associate professor in computing at Kuwait University (KU); Mr. Ahmad Tawfiq Albahar, radio producer and host at the Ministry of Information in Kuwait; Dr. Iyad Abu Doush, ORG director and professor of computer science at AUK; and Mrs. Al-Khansa Al-Husseini, director of planning and research at the Public Authority for Disability Affairs. 

Dr. Zainab underscored the importance of proactive measures that individuals and organizations can implement to foster inclusivity in digital environments, whilst Mr. Ahmad shared personal insights into improving digital accessibility for individuals with visual impairment. 

On the other hand, Dr. Iyad emphasized the significance of integrating digital accessibility guidelines into the core curriculum of computer science programs to ensure future generations of developers prioritize inclusivity. Mrs. Al-Khansa also shed light on common barriers hindering the widespread adoption of digital accessibility standards among government agencies. She proposed strategies to overcome these obstacles, thus creating a more inclusive digital environment. 

This panel discussion exemplified the institution's dedication to promoting inclusivity in the digital sphere. By convening experts from various fields, including academia, government, and media, AUK showcased its commitment to addressing the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in accessing digital content.

Cultivating Excellence: AUK CCE's Leadership Workshops
AUK Center for Continuing Education (CCE) recently organized two impactful workshops: the Education Empowerment Series and the Cultivate and Elevate Leadership Workshop. These sessions provided participating teachers with valuable knowledge and skills to enhance their expertise for future educational endeavors. 
 
The Education Empowerment Series emphasized the essential role of assessment in optimizing the teaching and learning process, while also equipping teachers with essential skills to foster a positive classroom environment conducive to effective learning. Additionally, it highlighted the importance of cultivating empathetic and motivating teacher-student relationships.  
 
On the other hand, the Cultivate and Elevate Leadership Workshop explored various aspects of organizational leadership, including analyzing leadership approaches tailored to educational settings, fostering positive school cultures, and refining team management skills for enhanced collaboration and motivation. It also offered insights into conflict resolution, problem-solving, and effective writing instruction techniques.  
 
These workshops collectively underscored the significance of assessment, empathy, and effective leadership in promoting holistic student development and maintaining harmonious educational environments.

Sustainability Spotlight: AUK Library's Earth Day Open House
The AUK library hosted its annual open house in celebration of Earth Day, spotlighting a sustainability-themed event aimed at raising awareness about pressing environmental issues. This year's open house showcased a vibrant array of student organizations, clubs, and academic courses, all dedicated to initiatives aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. These efforts spanned commitments to affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action. 
 
The AUK community actively engaged in educational activities designed to deepen their understanding of sustainability. Students from an Environmental Studies class led trivia quizzes and organized scavenger hunts, while the Data Club and other student groups shared their undergraduate research, which included contributions to a published volume by Taylor & Francis titled, Sustainable Innovations in Management in the Digital Transformation Era.  
 
The open house also welcomed external community partners, including publishers, content providers, and Campus France, who highlighted English-language higher education opportunities in France focusing on pertinent subjects. Additionally, the founders of Warsha Graph demonstrated to students how to create unique art through eco-printing and recycled paper. 
 
The library team introduced new resources and research guides and presented innovative library technologies aimed at enhancing the academic journey for scholars and students. Guests were also informed about the various avenues for accessing and maximizing the wealth of materials and collections available both on and off campus. 
 
By empowering individuals with the tools, information, and inspiration needed to effect meaningful environmental action, the AUK library exemplifies the transformative potential of education in building a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Sustainability Spotlight: AUK Library's Earth Day Open House

AUK Holds Groundbreaking Conference on Trauma & Resilience
The Counseling Center at AUK hosted a pioneering conference that delved into the issues of trauma and resilience. This noteworthy event brought together professionals, researchers, practitioners, and students from diverse backgrounds to explore the latest advancements in the field. 

Dr. George Chedid, director of the Counseling Center, set the tone for the conference with his opening remarks, extending a warm welcome to attendees and expressing heartfelt appreciation for their participation in this invaluable forum for collaboration and knowledge exchange. 

The conference featured esteemed speakers from abroad, including Dr. Theodore Waters from NYU Abu Dhabi; Dr. Maria Campo Redondo from United Arab Emirates University; and Dr. Kate Ellis from the American University in Cairo. Each speaker presented insightful perspectives on trauma and resilience, covering topics such as attachment development, relational approaches to healing trauma, and culturally appropriate interventions in the Middle East.  

In addition to hosting renowned international speakers, the conference also showcased the impactful contributions of local personalities. HH Sheikha Intisar AlSabah discussed the unique work of the Intisar Foundation, helping women affected by war and violence through drama therapy. Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa also talked about transforming emotions through cognitive change, captivating the audience with his innovative ideas. 

The conference concluded with a dynamic panel discussion featuring Dr. Joanne Hands from the Kuwait Counseling Center; Dr. Sami Ouanes, consultant psychiatrist from MindWell Clinic; Dareen Tawil, school counselor from the American United School (AUS), and Mais Anshasi, instructional coach from Al-Bayan Bilingual School (BBS).  

AUK President, Dr. Rawda Awwad, along with deans and faculty members, attended the conference. With participants from diverse backgrounds and institutions across Kuwait, the event emphasized the relevance and importance of the topic. Engaging discussions among attendees showcased the high value and quality of the presentations. 

The "Trauma and Resilience" conference was more than just a gathering; it was a resounding success that underscored AUK's commitment to fostering collaboration, learning, and dialog in the realm of mental health. By staying at the forefront of such initiatives, AUK continues to demonstrate its leadership in addressing the pressing challenges of our time.
