AUK Students Achieve Remarkable 3rd Place Victory in Gulf Programming Competition
Students from the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) at AUK secured an impressive 3rd place in the 11th Gulf Programming Competition (GPC), held at Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman. They showcased their abilities on a prominent regional platform, competing against 42 teams spanning four countries: Oman, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
Bader AlOtaibi, Yousef AlHamad, and Fahad Kalloush, serving as AUK representatives, demonstrated their problem-solving prowess and coding skills throughout the competition. Their outstanding performance was achieved under the expert guidance of Ms. Dima Aburshaid, senior instructor at CEAS and GPC judge, with additional coaching support from instructional assistant, Ms. Razan AlFar; and teaching assistant, Mr. David Liang.
Ms. Aburshaid, who has been diligently coaching these students over the past two years, commented on their well-deserved ranking, “This achievement is nothing but a result of consistency, hard work, and dedication. I am very proud of them and their dedication. What the students learn in these competitions cannot be taught in a classroom. This goes beyond the academic knowledge. They learn that they can be pushed beyond their perceived limits, that they can deliver under pressure, to communicate, resolve and achieve.”
GPC is renowned for its rigorous challenges and intense competition, where teams of three students collaborate using a single computer to solve a set of complex programming problems within a limited time frame of 5 hours. Participants are evaluated based on the number of correct solutions, the speed of problem-solving, and the minimum number of attempts made to solve each question.
This accomplishment underscores the University's unwavering dedication to nurturing talent, championing excellence, and cultivating an atmosphere that encourages innovation and lifelong learning.

AUK Hosts Book Talk by Research Affiliate
AUK recently welcomed Dr. Juliet Dinkha, a research affiliate and licensed clinical psychologist, for a compelling discussion. Dr. Dinkha shared insights from her recently published book, co-authored in collaboration with AUK alumna and child-life specialist, Nourah Al Enezi, as well as psychotherapist and mental health counselor, Natasha Sharma. Titled "Parents, Children, Teens, and Psychological Viewpoints on Parenting Practices in Kuwait and Greece," the book delves into various facets of parenting practices within these two distinct cultural contexts.
The AUK library co-hosted this event with the Office of Research and Grants’ Faculty Speaker Series (FSS). The event provided an opportunity for the campus community to learn more about Dr. Dinkha’s collaborative work and research with Ms. Al Enezi and Ms. Sharma.
Dr. Dinkha was introduced by Dr. Salime Smadi, professor of organizational behavior at the College of Business and Economics, and Ms. Asma Al Kanan, the University librarian at AUK, both of whom noted that the University was proud to host a former professor back to campus to share her work.
During her talk, Dr. Dinkha discussed how the book originated during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the authors noticed that global events were sparking conversations about resilience in young people and the parental role in raising healthy, successful adults.
The book features interviews with 25 individuals from 18 diverse families in Greece and the Middle East, exploring childhood, parenting practices, traumatic incidents, and generational and cultural differences influencing family dynamics. Drawing on academic theories, such as Erik Erikson's psychosocial development, the authors highlighted the impact of childhood trauma in these personal stories and shed light on how families overcome adversity to support their children's future success.
The event attracted an audience of students, alumni, faculty, and staff, ending with a lively Q&A session as attendees sought to learn more about the book’s findings and Dr. Dinkha’s thoughts on how such insights can inspire readers.

AUK Introduces Cutting-Edge Greenhouse with Innovative Tower Farming Technology
AUK unveiled its innovative greenhouse, a cutting-edge facility strategically crafted to harness the potential of tower farming. This state-of-the-art establishment aims to proactively tackle the rising pressure on food production and overcome the constraints of limited urban space.
AUK partnered with Tower Garden USA, offering tower farming technology with aeroponics, vertical design, LED lighting, and efficient water and nutrient management. Tower farming emerges as a space-efficient, high-yield solution.
By growing plants vertically, tower farms can produce large amounts of fresh produce in a compact space, while consuming less water and energy than conventional farming methods. These towers rely on aeroponic technology, meaning this agriculture method can be 100% soilless.
The greenhouse, covering an area of 80 square meters, comprises three primary sections: the seeding area; tower farm planting and harvesting area; and water pump and nutrient area. It houses a total of 20 towers, including 15 Standard towers with 13 pots, 5 micro towers with 25 pots, and a variety of plants like arugula, lettuce mix, cinnamon basil, parsley, cilantro, and cherry tomato, totaling 1760 plants.
AUK's pioneering greenhouse and tower farming strategy promises to spearhead a profound transformation in urban agriculture. This innovative approach provides a sustainable, space-efficient, and exceptionally productive solution to address the rising demands of future food production. The University's unwavering dedication to sustainable agriculture solidifies its leadership role in this evolving landscape, shaping a future where the cultivation of fresh, nutritious produce is not only efficient but also sustainable.
