AUK to Host IEEE EDUCON 2023
AUK is the official host for the upcoming IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference (EDUCON 2023). Held for the first time in Kuwait, the University will be accommodating international conference attendees in May. EDUCON 2023 is sponsored by KIPCO (premier sponsor), Burgan Bank (premier sponsor), and Gulf Insurance Company - GIG (premier sponsor), MathWorks (platinum sponsor), Binary Logic (platinum sponsor) ABET (platinum sponsor), along with Qatar Airways as the official carrier. 
 
The IEEE EDUCON 2023 is the fourteenth in a series of conferences that rotate among central locations in IEEE Region 8 (Europe, Middle East, and Africa). EDUCON is one of the flagship conferences of the IEEE Education Society. 
 
Held every year since 2010, EDUCON provides an opportunity to scientists, professional engineers, and students to present their work, publish their results, exchange ideas, and network for future scientific and industrial collaborations. 
 
The conference will be an opportunity to host 200 attendees from 40 countries consisting of a diverse and global group of scientists to discuss the latest research topics in engineering education including artificial intelligence, developments in STEM education, among others.

CCE-AUK Signs Partnership with GATES Group
Center for Continuing Education (CCE) at AUK signed a strategic partnership agreement with GATES Group, recognizing the need for complementing quality culture in the Kuwaiti healthcare sector through education and accreditation. GATES is a regional growth and development company that helps healthcare organizations and professionals solve problems related to policy, performance, operations, quality, and finance.
 
This partnership brings together more than two decades of management expertise of GATES and the academic experience of AUK to provide a world-class learning experience for leaders and healthcare professionals who are seeking to advance their skills and knowledge in all healthcare management-related fields.
 
Commenting on the MOU, AUK president, Dr. Rawda Awwad said, “Our Center for Continuing Education, is committed to providing our adult learners with the best possible learning experiences and preparing them for success in their careers. Signing an MOU with GATES Group is a testament to our commitment to providing our learners with practical experience and exposure to global industry leaders. This partnership will enable us to leverage the expertise and resources of GATES Group to create meaningful opportunities for our learners and help them build the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in today's competitive job market.”

As part of the partnership, GATES will provide industry insights and guidance to help shape the curriculum and ensure that it remains relevant and up-to-date, as well as offer networking opportunities and access to their extensive network of industry professionals, giving students the chance to connect with multi-national experts in the field.
 
The professional education programs offered through this partnership will be the Diploma in Healthcare Management & Leadership (approved by PAAET), Certified Accreditation Surveyor (accredited by ISQua-EEA), Healthcare Business & Entrepreneurship, in addition to other programs designed to meet the evolving needs of healthcare industry professionals, with a focus on practical, real-world knowledge and skills.
 
CCE director, Nehal ElShafei, commented on the significance of this partnership, “Kuwait's healthcare system has huge capabilities in terms of highly qualified doctors, technology infrastructure, and facilities, which can contribute to a healthy country all through effective and evidence-based management. AUK Students Participate in Sigma Tau Delta Annual Convention in Denver, USA
Students from AUK participated in the Sigma Tau Delta Annual Convention held in Denver, Colorado, USA. Athraa Al-Ghadhban, Amanda El-Naggar, and Noora Al-Sabah showcased their academic excellence as representatives of the AUK chapter of Sigma Tau Delta—the International English Honor Society.   
 
Throughout the four-day convention, dynamic discussions took place with students from around the world. Under the guidance of their supervisor, Dr. Hanan Muzaffar, associate professor of English literature, the students displayed their in-depth understanding and critical thinking at the international event. Focused on readings of this year’s spotlight author, Toni Morrison, Athraa Al-Ghadhban presented her research titled, "Hannah's Actions Shaped Sula's Personality," Amanda El-Naggar delved into the theme of "Madness & The Bottom," and Noora Al-Sabah explored the topic of "The Proper Lady vs. the Women in Sula." In recognition of her outstanding work, Noora Al-Sabah received the third-place award in the Author Spotlight category. 
 
Dr. Hanan Muzaffar expressed her pride in their accomplishments, saying, "Their outstanding performance at the Sigma Tau Delta Annual Convention is a testament to their dedication and hard work. I am confident that Athraa, Amanda, and Noora will continue to be exemplary representatives of AUK and inspire their peers to strive for academic success." 
 
Commenting on the convention, Noora Al-Sabah said, "Hearing various diverse voices further cemented my pride in being a member of the Sigma Tau Delta English honor society, as it has opened up a new world of opportunities for me. It was truly inspiring to be among so many passionate scholars. The experience has further ignited my passion for literature and language." 
 
Sigma Tau Delta is an esteemed international honor society that recognizes the academic achievements of students in the fields of English language, literature, and writing. With over 900 active chapters around the world, Sigma Tau Delta encourages a spirit of camaraderie and intellectual exchange among its members. The AUK chapter, Alpha Rho Eta, established in 2009, has been dedicated to upholding the society's core values of excellence, integrity, and community engagement, while providing its members with unique opportunities for academic and professional growth.

AUK Signs Memorandum of Understanding with URC
AUK signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with United Real Estate Company K.S.C.P (URC) to develop a cooperative working relationship on AUK programs.  
 
The MOU was signed by AUK president, Dr. Rawda Awwad, and Mr. Mazen Hawwa, URC vice-chairman and group chief executive officer. Attending the signing ceremony were URC representatives, the AUK president’s cabinet, and director of Alumni Affairs and Career Development, Ms. Abir El Tannir.  
 
Dr. Rawda Awwad expressed her enthusiasm towards bringing together both parties’ strengths and expertise to create new opportunities for learning, discovery, and innovation, “We are delighted to collaborate with United Real Estate Company and work together in providing our students with valuable educational experiences and opportunities to further their professional development, and thus substantially increasing their visibility in the marketplace.”   
 
Also commenting on the occasion, Mr. Mazen Hawwa said, “We are pleased to enter into this partnership with AUK. Through this agreement, we will be working together by combining expertise and resources with the objective of expanding the breadth of both institutions’ research, leading to more innovation and success.” 
 
This memorandum provides AUK students with field training and internship opportunities at URC, including career workshops and seminars presented by successful industry leaders and entrepreneurs. On-site visits will also be made available by URC for students interested in employment within the construction industry. Other outcomes of the MOU include collaborative research projects and joint international programs.  
 
This agreement is a testament to AUK’s distinguished integration of liberal arts principles that allow its students to engage with their chosen fields both in theory and practice.

CCE-AUK Successfully Completes KFH Direct Sales Champion Certificate Program
Center for Continuing Education (CCE) of the American University of Kuwait (AUK) concluded the Direct Sales Champion Certificate Program for Kuwait Finance House (KFH), as part of the bank’s strategy to develop the skills and expertise of promising banking business and sales professionals. The program was uniquely designed to inspire and drive passionate sales professionals towards becoming top performers in their fields, thereby leveraging their sales numbers.  
 
The objective of the program was to train sales professionals on select sales competencies that grant them competitive advantages within the business market. The sessions were delivered at the AUK campus with state-of-art facilities and services, by credible and certified facilitators who enthusiastically guided the participants through creative exercises, exciting activities, reflective moments, motivational talks, presentations, peer-to-peer learning, and more interactive learning exercises.  
 
As KFH’s direct sales champions, the delegates focused on key topics such as team performance, negotiations, emotional intelligence, goal-setting strategy, storytelling for sales to further enhance skills and mindset that support in improved productivity and team harmony. 
 
CCE director, Nehal ElShafei, commented on the successful conclusion of the training program, “It is motivating to find that participants demonstrating motivation to achieve best results stemming out of their desire to achieve KFH’s business goals. They have achieved an enriched perspective and practical abilities as influencers, while interacting with their stakeholders and colleagues at work.” 
 
CCE offers a diverse range of successful programs that cater to the professional development needs of individuals and organizations in Kuwait and beyond, empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their respective fields.

AUKMUN Board Members Attend 8th Annual MUN Conference at AUD
AUK Model United Nations (MUN) board members, Mariam Abusharkh, president; Heba AlHooti, vice president; Sabika AlBahar, treasurer; and Suad AlBahar, public relations officer, attended the 8th Annual MUN Conference at the American University in Dubai (AUD).  
 
As delegates, the AUKMUN board members represented their assigned countries at the Security Council Commission and participated in the conference's discussions on the intervention of both USA and NATO in the Russia-Ukraine war. The board members researched their respective countries' decisions concerning the topic, presenting two resolutions in which one of them passed.  
 
President Mariam Abusharkh conveyed her gratitude towards AUK for their support, “I would like to thank AUK for supporting their students and giving us, AUKMUN, the chance to travel all the way to UAE to represent our club and our university abroad. It was a beautiful experience that will forever accompany our club members.”  
 
The three-day conference was an opportunity for the AUKMUN board members to represent AUK and participate in a global platform to discuss crucial international issues. Such experiences contribute to the personal and professional development of AUK’s students which is proven by numerous alumni who have pursued careers in diplomacy and international affairs.

AUKMUN Board Members Attend 8th Annual MUN Conference at AUD

AUK Welcomes Student Intern from Dartmouth College
AUK welcomed Brandon Mioduszewski, a member of the class of 2025 at Dartmouth College, as a student intern for the 2023 spring semester. Brandon will be working in the International Relations Department and the library. 
 
Brandon, who comes from Chicago, USA, is an executive chair for the Dartmouth Undergraduate Research Association, an Arabic language tutor, a blogger for Dartmouth Admissions, and a member of the Arabic Club. He has a keen interest in audio design and produced an audio album titled ‘Middle Eastern Voices at Dartmouth,’ which is available on Spotify and Apple Music. The album shares a wide variety of Middle Eastern students and faculty's stories. Currently, he is the producer of the podcast 'Making Sense of the Middle East.’ 
 
After graduation, Brandon plans to pursue academic research mainly in gender/sexuality, politics of exhibition, and counterculture in the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. 
 
As an intern at AUK, Brandon represents the significance of the partnership between Dartmouth and AUK, which aims to promote academic excellence, cultural understanding, and mutual enrichment between the two prestigious institutions.

AUK Dean of CEAS Gives Keynote Speech at KIPIC
The dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), Dr. Amir Zeid, at AUK, delivered a keynote speech at the Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC) headquarters in Al-Zour. The title of the speech was "A conversation with ChatGPT: Exploring Future Opportunities and Applications,” where he addressed the myths of AI, ethical concerns, and demonstrated the newly-released ChatGPT 4.0 and its related applications. 
 
Dean Zeid highlighted the potential benefits of ChatGPT in the oil industry and how it could revolutionize various business domains, including education. He also discussed the common misconceptions about AI and emphasized the importance of ethical considerations when using such technology. 
 
The event was attended by representatives from KIPIC, as well as other industry leaders and members of the academic community. Dean Zeid's keynote speech was well-received and sparked a lively discussion among attendees about the future of ChatGPT and its potential applications. 
 
AUK faculty continue to be informed and at the top of the latest developments in artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technology, ensuring that students receive education that prepares them for the demands of the modern workforce.

AUK ORG Organizes Workshop for Student Research Assistants
The Office of Research and Grants (ORG) at AUK hosted the "Workshop for Student Research Assistants" to provide guidance to new student employees hired by ORG for the upcoming spring semester.  

The workshop was presented by a panel of esteemed speakers, including Ms. Wadhhah Ahmed, reference and instruction librarian; Ms. Marwa Kandil, teaching assistant at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences; Ms. Jayda AlFarouqi, senior student affairs coordinator; and Ms. Afsah Abdullah, ORG research assistant. 

To begin the workshop, Dr. Iyad Abu Doush, ORG director, welcomed all participants and shared the agenda, briefing the attendees on topics that would help in conducting research with their faculty supervisors.  
Ms. Wadhhah talked about the library's support for research and teaching, providing a demonstration on how to access library resources and specialized databases. She emphasized the importance of citation and introduced some citation tools like Mendeley, Zotero, RefWorks, and EndNote. Ms. Marwa discussed two tools in particular—Mendeley and Overleaf—and explained how they aid in research.  

Ms. Jayda showed attendees how to fill out timesheets on AUK's self-service banner and explained to them the procedure of submitting it for approval. Additionally, Ms. Afsah detailed the importance of research ethics and stated several principles and guidelines necessary for researchers to follow.  

The workshop concluded with a Q&A session. This successful workshop equipped students with valuable skills, showcasing ORG’s commitment to providing continued support and guidance for a holistic student experience at AUK.

AUK Hosts Alumni Reunion
AUK hosted its annual alumni reunion that was organized by the Office of Alumni Affairs and Career Development (AACD), with the support of alumni who own successful businesses in the region.  
 
The AUK alumni reunion is an opportunity for graduates to connect with former classmates, reminisce about their college days, and catch up with one another. This year's reunion was especially memorable, with the 90's theme adding a fun and nostalgic twist that drew a large crowd of enthusiastic attendees.  
 
Director of AACD, Abir El Tannir, offered her remarks on the success of this year’s reunion, “AUK’s 2023 Alumni Reunion was a resounding success! Alumni from a wide range of years came together to reminisce about good old times and celebrate their achievements. Everyone enjoyed the 90’s theme, the range of activities, and the networking opportunities. Graduates also expressed their gratitude for reconnecting with old friends and making new connections within our vibrant AUK community. We want to thank all those who attended and helped make the event such a memorable one, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our alumni network all around the world.” 
 
The alumni-owned managing company created an unforgettable event that left attendees thoroughly satisfied. In line with the 90's theme, Decorations featured neon colors and graffiti art to reflect the 90's theme, and gift bags were also distributed throughout the event.  
 
The success of this year's alumni reunion is a testament to the passion and dedication of AUK's graduates, many of whom are successful entrepreneurs and leaders in their respective fields. Their contributions to the event made it not only a fun and memorable evening but also an opportunity to showcase the talents and accomplishments of AUK alumni.
