Exploring Global Finance at AUK: Dr. Maxime Izoulet Discusses Monetary Policies and Economic Shifts
The College of Business and Economics (CBE) at AUK recently hosted Dr. Maxime Izoulet, associate researcher at the European Institute for Development Studies (IEED), for two thought-provoking presentations that explored key topics in global finance and economic policy. Dr. Izoulet, who brings over 15 years of experience in the French public sector and holds a PhD in Economics, shared his expertise with both students and faculty during his visit to campus.

In his first presentation, titled "The Monetary Policy of China's Central Bank," Dr. Izoulet provided an in-depth analysis of the role played by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) in maintaining the country's financial stability. He discussed how the PBOC's policies are designed to manage liquidity, control inflation, and support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Dr. Izoulet emphasized how China’s unique approach to monetary policy has allowed the country to navigate global financial crises more effectively than many Western nations.

For faculty members, Dr. Izoulet delivered a second presentation titled "Shift in Financial Hegemony: A Historical Perspective." This session examined the shifts in global financial power over time, focusing on the historical rise of financial institutions like the Bank of England in the 17th century and how these developments laid the foundation for the modern financial system. He also touched upon the influence of major financial crises in shaping monetary policies worldwide.

Both presentations were followed by lively Q&A sessions, where participants had the opportunity to engage with Dr. Izoulet on the topics covered, gaining deeper insights into the complexities of global financial systems.

AUK and Playbook Collaborate to Connect Women with a Global Network of Opportunities
AUK has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Playbook, a global networking and mentorship platform for women, to offer 100 scholarships to eligible members of the AUK community. This partnership — led by AUK alumna Taiba Al-Humaidhi, a 2006 graduate of AUK with a degree in management — will provide students, faculty, staff, and alumni with access to Playbook’s masterclasses, networking opportunities, workshops, and mentorship programs.
 
Playbook, known for its award-winning, all-female leadership team, is a leading edtech platform transforming the careers of women globally. The platform offers a cinematic library of masterclasses, executive speaker sessions, and one-on-one mentorship opportunities. With over 6,000 members across 200+ cities in 50+ countries, Playbook is at the forefront of advancing women’s career and personal growth. This MOU highlights Playbook’s mission of democratizing access to world-class professional development resources, ensuring women across industries are equipped to succeed.

AUK Leads Global Innovation: Fifth Annual NASA Space Apps Challenge Inspires Creativity and Innovation
AUK continues to make its mark in global innovation by successfully organizing the 2024 NASA Space Apps Challenge, the world’s largest hackathon introduced by NASA. Sponsored by Kuwait Projects Company (Holding) – KIPCO, this milestone marks AUK’s fifth consecutive year as the exclusive host of the prestigious event in Kuwait, reaffirming its commitment to fostering creativity and technological advancement among young innovators.

Held at the Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Centre, the 48-hour hackathon, themed “The Sun Touches Everything,” brought together over 200 participants from diverse backgrounds, including high school students, university students, graduates, and professionals. The event saw 31 teams take on NASA's complex challenges, working to develop innovative solutions in fields such as space exploration, climate resilience, and sustainability.

AUK’s role as the sole organizer of the NASA Space Apps Challenge in Kuwait highlights its leadership in promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, and its mission to foster a dynamic learning environment that inspires innovation. 

AUK president, Dr. Rawda Awwad, commented on the event and its caliber on a local and global scale, “The NASA Space App Challenge gave us the chance to team up with public and private partners, bringing together students, alumni, and adults from independent institutions and schools in Kuwait. This kind of collaboration is so important—it allows us as a community to learn together, share ideas, and tackle the big challenges facing our world, all while staying true to the AUK mission of making a real impact through education.”

Participants in this year's challenge formed multidisciplinary teams, including scientists, coders, graphic designers, space enthusiasts, and business strategists, to collaborate and create cutting-edge applications, games, and websites that addressed real-world challenges provided by NASA.
 
On her part, Ms. Eman Al Awadhi, KIPCO’s Group Senior Vice President – Corporate Communications & Investor Relations, said, “We are delighted to continue to collaborate with AUK in sponsoring the NASA Space Apps Challenge for the fifth year. This comes as part of our efforts to support innovation and encourage the next generation of creative minds in finding scientific solutions for real-world challenges.”
 
She added, “The challenges tackled throughout the event inspire young minds to explore new horizons in space and science, and also encourage teamwork for the development of innovative solutions. At KIPCO, we believe that this is an investment in the future, and we look forward to seeing the top three winners of this year's challenge representing Kuwait at the global level.”
 
Dr. Marwa Sharawi, assistant professor of Computer Science and the local lead for the 2024 NASA Space Apps Challenge in Kuwait, applauded the participants’ creativity and perseverance, stating, “Each participant has demonstrated remarkable ingenuity and dedication. This hackathon exemplifies how local talent can contribute to solving global challenges.” 

The event concluded with a closing ceremony, where winners were celebrated for their groundbreaking ideas and potential for real-world impact. A panel of esteemed judges evaluated the projects based on creativity, technical merit, and social impact. This distinguished panel included Dr. Mohammed El-Abd, AUK dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS); Dr. Ahmad Al Saber, acting director of the AUK Office of Research & Grants (ORG); Mr. Eric Van Hoecke, vice president of Middle East Operations at ST Engineering iDirect; and Mr. Khaled Al Jamaan, International Astronomical Union (IAU) representative. 

The first-place project, Elegant Earth Worm, led by Jaffer Mahdi, is an educational game designed for kids. The game aims to raise awareness about sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship by teaching children how everything on Earth is interconnected. Through engaging gameplay, it encourages young players to explore ways to improve the planet and understand the importance of sustainable practices.

The second-place project, Under Pressure, addressed NASA's "Beyond Sunlight" challenge by developing an immersive 3D simulation using Unity to explore the deep-sea environment. The interactive simulation allows users to delve into the underwater world, learning about marine ecosystems, energy formation, and natural processes in regions beyond sunlight's reach. 

The third-place project, KES Astronomy Team, introduced an innovative approach to astronomical data analysis by developing a website. The site is designed to educate young astronomers, particularly middle schoolers and teenagers, about exoplanet exploration. 

These teams will advance to NASA’s global judging stage, where their projects will compete against solutions from across the world.

Reflecting on the significance of the event, Dr. El-Abd highlighted AUK’s strategic role in encouraging the next generation of scientists and engineers, “AUK is proud to lead initiatives that challenge young minds to think critically and creatively. The NASA Space Apps Challenge is not just about solving technical problems; it’s about inspiring a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship that can shape the future of Kuwait and beyond.”

By hosting the NASA Space Apps Challenge, AUK continues to demonstrate its commitment to being a hub for innovation, creativity, and leadership in the STEM fields. Championing Sustainability Through Art: AUK Students Participate in "Waste to Wonder" Exhibition
Professor Clark Stoeckley, associate professor of graphic design at AUK, and his students made a profound impact at the "Waste to Wonder" exhibition, held at The Avenues Gallery. The event celebrated creativity and sustainability, showcasing the students' remarkable ability to transform plastic waste into thought-provoking art pieces that advocate for environmental conservation.

The exhibition underscored the essential role of youth in driving awareness about sustainability and instilled a sense of hope for a greener future. Students demonstrated their potential as future leaders in environmental conservation through artistic expression.

Among the standout pieces was a striking paper mâché Killer Whale by Mohammad AlOsaimi, adorned with discarded keyboard keys, alongside a vibrant Jellyfish sculpture crafted from repurposed plastic. Reflecting on his journey, AlOsaimi shared, “It started as a small sketch for a class project. I never thought more of it. The massive support from my professor and encouragement helped me make art pieces bigger than I ever thought I could. I am very grateful for this opportunity and for being able to exhibit my work alongside other great artists, my fellow AUK students, and, of course, my professor. It was an enjoyable and memorable experience for my first exhibition.”

Another notable work was Jumana Maidian's intricately detailed Seahorse sculpture, which continued the theme of ocean preservation. Additionally, students Areni Aghob and Noor Al Saffer contributed a short video, "We are Drowning in Plastic," which served as a powerful reminder of the pressing issue of plastic pollution while promoting sustainable living habits.

Dr. Fahad Dhawi, Chair of the Art and Graphic Design Department emphasized the significance of this event, “Participating in exhibitions like these is crucial for our students’ growth, teaching the value of teamwork and shared ideas. It also helps them understand the impact their work can have when presented publicly, preparing them to take responsibility and make meaningful contributions during their study years and post-graduation.”

Professor Clark Stoeckley, who led the initiative, contributed his own piece to the exhibition—Playful Plasticity, a geometric abstract artwork composed of meticulously cut layers of plastic bags and wrappers. His work further reflected his commitment to sustainability through art and his dedication to inspiring his students to make a difference.
 
AUK’s students are empowered to express themselves freely and take responsibility for shaping a more sustainable future, leaving a lasting impact both within the university and the wider community.

AUK Sets the Stage for a Transformative 2024/2025 Academic Year with Orientation and Welcome Week Activities
AUK has launched the 2024/2025 academic year with a resounding commitment to academic excellence and personal growth for both new and returning students. The University's orientation and welcome week activities have set the stage for an inspiring and transformative educational journey.
 
The University began its series of orientations with a program for its new staff and faculty members. The event was meticulously designed to provide a holistic understanding of AUK's organizational structure, key departments, and logistical processes. Additionally, the University’s Office of Human Resources curated activities that aimed to foster professional connections and integrate new staff and faculty with the campus community.
 
Furthermore, the Office of Student Life, Division of Student Affairs held an orientation session for new students. In her welcome address during the event, AUK president, Dr. Rawda Awwad, highlighted the University’s dedication to offering an enriching educational environment, “We’re here to push you to think deeply, to ask big questions, and to explore things that may challenge you. You won’t just focus on your major: you’ll broaden your understanding of the world, and that will prepare you for anything the future throws at you.  You’ll learn just as much from your setbacks as your successes, and you’ll come out stronger because of it. And you’re not alone in this journey—you have a whole community here to support you.”

The University also placed a strong emphasis on fostering connections among students through networking and team-building activities. This initiative aimed to create a sense of community and inclusivity, enriching the AUK campus environment, and contributing to the holistic development of students.

Newcomers were taken on guided tours that introduced the University's state-of-the-art facilities and essential services. These tours ensured that students were well-informed and equipped to utilize the resources available to them, providing a strong foundation for a successful academic journey.

Following orientation each year, AUK kicks off Welcome Week with a series of activities. A key event is the Involvement Fair, where students discover clubs and organizations to join, enhancing their campus life experience.

AUK Sets the Stage for a Transformative 2024/2025 Academic Year with Orientation and Welcome Week Activities

AUK and KIB Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Drive Innovation and Student Development
AUK and Kuwait International Bank (KIB) signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at fostering innovation and accelerating student development through collaborative efforts through KIB’s Human Intelligence (HI) Innovation Program. The MOU was signed by Dr. Rawda Awwad, AUK president; and Mr. Mohamed El-Shareef, General Manager of Digital Innovation and Data Intelligence Department at KIB. 

This collaboration is designed to foster student innovation and provide AUK students with meaningful opportunities to apply their academic skills in real-world environments. A key focus of the partnership is the participation in HI Innovation Program, led by KIB with support from a globally renowned consultant, where students can engage with industry experts to develop innovative solutions in the financial sector. 

Dr. Rawda emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, "At AUK, we are committed to equipping our students with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed. This collaboration with KIB not only offers valuable hands-on experience but also opens doors for future career prospects in one of Kuwait’s leading financial institutions."

Through the MOU, AUK will facilitate internship opportunities for its students with KIB, offering them hands-on experience in a renowned banking environment. In addition, KIB will consider students and graduates for future employment opportunities, based on their performance during these internships. 
 
On his part, Mr. El-Shareef said, "We believe in the importance of combining academic education with practical experience. Through this partnership with the American University of Kuwait for our HI Innovation Program, we aim to empower students to develop innovative solutions that address the rapidly evolving needs of the financial sector. We look forward to supporting the creative young generation eager to pursue careers in banking by providing them with opportunities to engage with industry experts and learn from real-world experiences that enhance their skills and open new career horizons."

Mr. El-Shareef added that the signing of this MoU marks a significant step in KIB's ongoing commitment to its comprehensive social responsibility strategy. It also reflects the Bank's dedicated efforts to support the education sector and its institutions, contributing to sustainable social and economic growth in Kuwait.

The HI Innovation Program collaboration will serve as a platform for future initiatives aimed at preparing the next generation of professionals and leaders in the financial and digital innovation sectors. AUK Welcomes Back HOOP Season 4: Celebrating Community and Competition
AUK will be the official venue sponsor for the HOOP Season 4 basketball tournament this September. HOOP is an alumni-led organization that embodies the entrepreneurial drive and leadership of its graduates. AUK will once again host the event on its campus, reaffirming its commitment to supporting alumni. Renowned for its intense competition and vibrant community spirit, the tournament’s return to AUK represents a meaningful homecoming to its roots.

HOOP will feature 12 teams with 120 players and 12 captains. The theme for this year’s tournament, “Where it All Started,” celebrates the return of HOOP Season 4 to its original venue at AUK.

Mohammed Al Saleh, senior sports coordinator, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This tournament not only celebrates competitive spirit but also strengthens our commitment to supporting local events and enhancing the sporting culture in the region. We look forward to another successful tournament and the dynamic interactions it will bring to our AUK community.” 

This partnership is just one of many examples of how the university encourages alumni-led projects, strengthening its community through ongoing collaboration and support.

AUK Reinforces its Role as Academic Partner in the LOYAC KON Program’s Success
AUK hosted LOYAC's ninth KON Social Entrepreneurship Program, continuing its longstanding role as the academic partner and venue host. The program, renowned for its impact on youth entrepreneurship in Kuwait, reached its culmination with a closing ceremony at AUK’s theater, further strengthening AUK’s commitment to fostering innovative and socially conscious leaders.

The "KON Social Entrepreneurship Program" is dedicated to instilling the values of social entrepreneurship in young individuals, empowering them to refine and implement their innovative ideas. Through comprehensive training sessions, lectures, and discussions led by a distinguished group of experts, participants gained the essential skills to transform their concepts into viable projects that contribute to societal improvement. This program also provides a platform for young entrepreneurs to enhance their existing ventures, advancing their professional journeys.

During the closing ceremony, AUK’s director of campus services and head of the sustainability committee, Mayce ElMostafa, expressed admiration for the participants' dedication and creativity. She stated, "We are incredibly proud to host such a forward-thinking program at AUK. The quality and innovation displayed by the participants were truly inspiring. We are eager to see these projects evolve and make an impact in our community."

The program was conducted at the University’s campus where the state-of-the-art facilities, modern technology, and vibrant atmosphere fostered creativity and productivity within the participants.

The American University of Kuwait Computer Science Program Renewed by ABET
AUK bachelor’s degree program in computer science has been renewed by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.  
 
ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.
 
Commenting on this achievement, the dean of the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences at AUK, Dr. Mohammed El Abd, stated, “This milestone is more than just a recognition of our past and present efforts; it is also a promise for the future. With this renewal, our program is poised to continue its tradition of excellence, offering our students a competitive edge in their academic and professional pursuits. It will also enhance our ability to attract top-tier faculty and students, further enriching the educational environment here at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.”

The College of Business & Economics is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business(AACSB); the College of Arts and Sciences is accredited by the American Academy for Liberal Education (AALE); its Bachelor of Arts in Design (concentration in graphic design) is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD); and the Intensive English Program is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA); the Computer Science program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).  The Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
